My Favorite and Least Favorite Orange-Scented Body Washes

In the late summer/early fall of 2023, I purchased The Body Shop’s Spiced Orange Shower Gel. The sweet and syrupy orange smell made me think of the tasty Triaminic Cough and Cold Medicine that I was given as a kid when I didn’t feel well. It also reminded me of the fruity Arcor hard candies that you get at the doctor’s office with that yummy gooey center. The spicy part of the shower gel reminded me of that awesome cinnamony peppery smell that was in Bath & Body Works’ discontinued Chestnut & Clove scent. Finally, the aloe vera in the formulation of this body wash feels so pillowy soft on the skin that it actually gives Crabtree & Evelyn’s Pomegranate & Argan Oil Shower Gel a serious run for its money. I flew through this and was so sad when it was done. It’s a shame that it doesn’t come in a larger size. Like The Body Shop’s Spiced Orange Shower Gel, Evolve’s African Orange Aromatic Wash has aloe in it and it feels very moisturizing on the skin. It has a thinner and oilier consistency and it’s more on the lighter side scent-wise. You can still smell it on your skin when you get out of the shower; it’s just more on the mild side. It’s also a much lighter-colored body wash. Moreover, this has more of a bitter and acidic smell that resembles the scent of an orange peel. The 2019 version of The Body Shop’s Satsuma Shower Gel was not the zesty juicy citrus scent that I was used to when I was a sales associate for the brand during its heyday in the 1990s. The orange here was bitter, acidic, and sour in a sickeningly strong way. It also had a cheap, plastic-like smell and it took forever to get through. It was impossible to get the pump dispenser to work. I had to unscrew it and dump the contents of the body wash into my hand. Due to the bulkiness of the bottle, this was difficult to do, especially when it got wet and slippery in the shower. There are still a lot of folks out there who love this scent. Robert Forster’s Grant & I and Alisson Wood’s Being Lolita

Right from the beginning, you’re basically dreading the untimely death of one of the lead singers of the group, Grant McLennan, from alcoholism. It’s not easy being a musician and the book captures this very well, especially if you’re more on the sensitive side and have depression, like Grant did. At the end of the day, he was too much of a people pleaser, whereas the other lead singer of the band and author of this book, Robert Forster, was more of an oddball and couldn’t care less what you thought of him and the Go-Betweens’ music.
